Back by popular demand, JOFA and Yeshivat Maharat, the first and only institution in North America to ordain Orthodox women, have joined forces for a second Summer Tour, bringing women scholars to communities throughout the United States! The Summer Tour, stopping in fifteen communities throughout June, July, and August, features shiurim and lectures given by women scholars associated with Yeshivat Maharat and JOFA. Some stops on the tour feature weeknight lectures, while others are full scholar-in-residence Shabbatonim with multiple shiurim.

The purpose of the Summer Tour is to continue exposing communities to models of female scholarship and leadership and to the missions and values of JOFA and Yeshivat Maharat.

Moreover, the Summer Tour aims to create a meaningful sense of connection between the geographically, socially, and religiously diverse communities hosting these women scholars. Through participation on the tour, communities are focusing not on what makes them different – whether they are from the East Coast, West Coast, Midwest, or the South, the height of their mehitzot, or their stance on partnership minyanim. Instead, these fifteen communities have come together to express their support for women leaders and scholars in the Orthodox community.

The 2018 Summer Tour launched in Highland Park, NJ on June 2nd with a shiur by Maharat Rachel Kohl Finegold on “[Re]Building Community: The Book of Ezra” at the Highland Park Women’s Tefillah Group. The second stop on the tour was on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, at the Stanton Street Shul. The shiur was given by Rabbi Eryn London on the topic of “Leading the Way: Different Models of Leadership in the Bible” and was organized by the leaders of the Women’s Tefillah Group at the Stanton Street Shul. The next stop on the tour will be on July 5th in Skokie, IL, where Maharat Ruth Balinsky Friedman will give a shiur at Skokie Valley Agudath Jacob on the topic of “How Women Can Progress in a Man’s World: A Study of Bnot Tzlofchad.”
