Unfair To Roosevelt

As they expound their harsh criticism of FDR, both Rafael Medoff (Letters, June 14) and Nelson Marans (Letters, June 21) – seem unaware that about 132,000 German Jews, nearly one quarter of all German Jews, found refuge in the United States, according to historian Ligel Hamilton. They also overlook that during most of the Shoah it was impossible for American forces to save Jews.

The United States did not have enough military strength. D-Day didn’t occur until June 1944. No troops could have saved Jews even then. By that time most Jews who died in the Shoah had been killed. The only other alternative was to bomb concentration camps, but doing that may have killed more Jews than Germans.
