Your editorial, “Arab Spring, Awful Autumn” (Sept. 16), gets it right when it says that now is the time to turn feelings of love for Israel into action. However, that action needs to take the form of working for a real resolution to this conflict by pushing our elected officials to make bold moves towards a negotiated peace.
The first step is making sure that Washington doesn’t cut aid to the Palestinian Authority. While I agree that the United Nations vote on Palestinian statehood could have negative ramifications, and I therefore support a United States veto, cutting aid to the moderates in the Palestinian camp would be disastrous.
Israeli and American security experts alike have noted the direct connection between aid to the PA and Israel’s security.
A negotiated resolution is the only way to achieve a lasting peace, and we need a strong PA in place for that to happen.
