On Editor’s Retirement

Like so many others, I was surprised and saddened by the news that Gary Rosenblatt would be stepping down as editor of The Jewish Week of New York (“Jewish Week Editor To Step Down After 26 Years,” June 28). His quiet and dignified leadership of one of America’s leading Anglo-Jewish publications has been a marvelous service to the Jewish community.

Whether one agrees with Gary on every issue or not, his measured and thoughtful commentary on Jewish affairs in the United States, Israel and around the world has been a most important part of the Jewish dialogue for decades.

Gary is not the only Jewish voice beginning the process of stepping down. Jerry Silverman will be leaving the helm of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) after making an enormous contribution to Jewish life. We can only wish that Gary and Jerry will find fulfillment in whatever they do next and that each will remain publicly engaged in Jewish life enriching us all.
