Even though I agree with the author’s basic point, it borders on sin to equate Clinton and Trump with the blithe phrase “two unpopular presidential candidates widely perceived as seriously flawed” (“As The Election Nears, No Prophetic Voice For The Poor,” Opinion, Oct. 7).

One proposes policies that would significantly benefit poorer people, while the other trades on the resentment of poorer people. One is meaningfully inspired by religious values; the other parrots them to give cover to evangelical supporters. Non-partisanship to this degree is equivalent to the author losing his own prophetic voice.
