Marokkaan, Jood, Homo, Hoer: Dutch Kids’ Top Slurs

Homo, hoer, Marokkaan and Jood are the most commonly heard slurs on Dutch playgrounds, according to Dutch News, quoting a recent research study by the Dutch academy of media and society.

Holland’s Jewish community numbers about 30,000, or 0.2 percent of a country of 16.7 million, but there are on average three to five calls per week from Jewish citizens to report anti-Semitic assaults or attacks, according to CIDI, the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel. In July 2014, there were more than 70 calls in one week, likely due to increased national tension regarding Operation Protective Edge.

Moroccans or Dutch of Moroccan ancestry account for a little over 2 percent of the population, or 371,000 people. They're one of the country's largest immigrant groups.

The results of this study are based on interviews with teachers, who will soon receive a new monitoring tool in order to observe and document playground insults.

The list will be revised at the end of October when the first results of the new round of monitoring are announced.
