Leaders Meet Envoys From Tsunami Region

Representatives of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations met Wednesday morning with diplomats from the four countries hardest hit by the Dec. 26 tsunami disaster.

“This is a chance to show that Jews understand tragedy and the need to respond,” said Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the Presidents Conference. He said the primary purpose of the session was to discuss relief efforts by Jewish organizations with envoys from Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Indonesia, but hoped that better ties and communication between American Jews and those countries would be a side benefit.

“Sometimes out of tragic circumstances can come a beneficial outcome,” said Hoenlein.
