Former Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Metzger Arrested

Gag order lifted as Metzger is arrested on Monday on suspicion of taking bribes and other charges.

A former chief rabbi of Israel was arrested on Monday on charges of taking bribes, money laundering, conspiracy to interfere with an investigation and other crimes, Haaretz reports.

Police suspect Rabbi Metzger of accepting bribes in the millions of shekels from organizations in return for promises to advance their interests during the time he was Ashkenazi chief rabbi, according to Haaretz.

The Israel Police National Fraud squad, which has been investigating Metzger for months, took him into custody and lifted a gag order on the case because it had strong evidence and suspected that Rabbi Metzger was trying to interfere with the investigation, Haaretz said.
