Vibrant Jewish Art Art Exhibition Opening
November 8 , 5:30 pm
On Friday, November 8 at 5:30 pm, Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor will host an art opening with wine and cheese reception featuring the work of the late and prominent Sag Harbor-based artist, Lydie Egosi. All are welcome to attend. Shabbat services will follow at 6 pm.
Nearly all of Egosi’s work is based explicitly on Jewish themes, reflecting her personal sense of a very strong Jewish spirituality even though she did not have a firm grounding in Jewish law and observance. Her work evokes a sort of folk‑simplicity, and, indeed, it is related to traditional folk‑art styles, most noticeably with the use of decorative borders. In her work, Egosi attempts to focus on the joyous moments in Jewish life, when people interact with ritual. To achieve this focus, she utilizes simplified depictions of ceremonial objects, Hebrew calligraphy, and the architecture and foliage of Jerusalem. Most noticeable, perhaps, is Egosi’s vibrant–and at times electrifying–use of color. Her tapestries contain as many as 60‑70 distinct color tones with an additional variety of textures. Her serigraphs are generally limited to 20 colors, but they are, nonetheless, dazzling in their impact.
