Trip of a Lifetime: Refugee Safe Haven via Japan

Mark Halpern, “The Trip of a Lifetime: Refugees Find Safe Haven via Japan.”

In the summer of 1940, diplomat Chiune Sugihara – known as “the Japanese Schindler” – issued transit visits that enabled over 6,000 Jews to escape war-torn Europe. Mark Halpern will describe one Polish Jewish woman’s journey from Poland to California, with stops in Lithuania, Russia, Japan, China, and Canada. A retired businessman, Mark is on the Executive Board of JRI-Poland and on the Advisory Board of Gesher Galicia. He is also the founder of the Bialystok Area Jewish Genealogy Group and the winner of the IAJGS’s 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award.

This meeting of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island is free and open to the public.

Meetings include announcements and a tip of the month.

Experts will be available a half-hour prior to the event (1:30 p.m.).
