The Thinking Heart Cantata
November 5 , 7:00 pm
Dutch and Jewish, Etty Hillesum defied Nazi cruelty with unselfish service to others. Through her suffering, she reached out to help others, refusing to let her tormentors rob life of meaning. To her people she became the thinking heart of her concentration camp. The cantata tells her story.
The cantata is intended to be a work of art and an instrument of education about the Holocaust. The text is based on the journal Etty kept until her deportation to Auschwitz. Today her writings are studied by Jews, Jesuits, and Buddhists alike. They bring home that the lesson of the Holocaust is a challenge to us all.
