Stand Up For Democracy!
November 3 , 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Join us as we commemorate the 24th anniversary of the assassination of Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin z”l.
This event draws its inspiration from the “Asefa Israelit” (Israeli Assembly) led by youth movements in Israel. The program includes facilitated dialogue circles on the challenges facing Israeli democracy and pluralism in the North American Jewish community (2 pm), a memorial ceremony led by local Zionist youth movements/organizations, and a personal interview with American-born Israeli author and journalist Yossi Klein Halevi (3:15 pm).
We are inspired by the Israeli Coalition “Remember the Murder. Stand Up for Democracy” and their Mission Statement (“Kol Koreh”), and driven by the idea of creating a strong pluralistic Jewish community, encouraging dialogue, and fighting polarization. The Israeli coalition is made up of movements, organizations, and individuals from all sectors of Israeli society: right and left, Jews and Arabs, religious and secular. It was established to ensure that the murder of Prime Minister and Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin is remembered as a warning sign for the Jewish People and seeks to renew the commitment to work tirelessly to strengthen Israeli democracy and safeguard it.
This year, on the 24th anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination, we are bringing these voices of democracy and dialogue to the New York City Jewish community. The Jewish community is coming together to support democracy and human equality as central in our Jewish values. Now is the time to turn to each other and spread this message. Together, we will remember the murder of Yitzhak Rabin, and stand up for democracy!
