Soundscapes of Modernity

November 18, 2018 , 6:30 pm

The Jewish Music Forum, a project of the American Society for Jewish Music, will present a program entitled “Soundscapes of Modernity: Jews and Music in Polish Cities” during the 19th and 20th centuries.

All Jewish Music Forum programs are free and open to the public. Ticket reservations can be made by clicking here or by emailing

Beginning with an introductory presentation by Dr. Halina Goldberg (Indiana University), the program continues with a concert by soloists from the Mason Gross School at Rutgers University, as well as its 55-voice Kirkpatrick Choir, under the direction of Dr. Patrick Gardner.

The concert presents music of Polish Jews that is little known to American audiences—choral pieces from 19th-century progressive (“Reform”) congregations, compositions associated with Jewish music societies, and avant-garde works by Jewish composers. It is an important window into a complex and contested past.
