Musical Selihot Weekend

Friday, August 31–Saturday, September 1

Friday, August 31, 6:30 p.m.: Mizrahi Kabbalat Shabbat service led by Dr. Galeet Dardashti, Assistant Professor of Jewish Music and Musician-in-Residence at JTS. A dynamic and participatory Sephardi/Mizrahi service, with beautiful melodies from a range of Middle Eastern and North African Jewish communities.

Friday, August 31, 7:45 p.m.: Shabbat dinner and talk: “Mizrahi Sacred Songs (Piyutim)—From Pulpit to Pop Chart.” Over a catered, kosher Shabbat dinner, Dr. Dardashti, will offer an interactive presentation on Jewish Mizrahi piyut traditions. Study and sing beautiful poetic songs, and gain an understanding of their shifting cultural significance throughout Jewish history and in Israeli pop and rock music today. RSVP required. $15 before August 20; $20 after August 20; free to members of CSH.

Saturday, September 1, 9:30 a.m.: Shabbat morning service led by Rabbi Jan Uhrbach, Director of JTS Block / Kolker Center for Spiritual Arts, followed by Kiddush.

Saturday, September 1, 9:00 p.m.: Monajat, Dardashti’s multimedia reimagining of the Selihot ritual inherited from her famed Iranian grandfather. Prepare your heart and soul for the High Holidays with Dr. Dardashti and an acclaimed ensemble of musicians, including Philip Mayer from the Tony Award-winning musical The Band’s Visit; Shanir Blumenkranz (Yemen Blues); Max ZT (House of Waters); and Zafer Tawil (Middle Eatsern music virtuoso). $15 per person.

Saturday, September 1, 10:45 p.m.: Selihot,  an inspirational and participatory service led by Rabbi Jan Uhrbach, featuring familiar melodies of the High Holy Days.
