Congregation Shearith Israel – A New Evening Tour

November 18, 2018 , 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Join us for a tour of the first Jewish congregation in North America founded in 1654, commonly known as the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue.

On this unique tour, with Janet R. Kirchheimer, a licensed NYC Tour Guide and long-time member of the synagogue, you’ll learn about the founding of the congregation, the Spanish Inquisition, pirates, and the struggles with Peter Stuyvesant.

Hear about the Jews efforts to create a community, as well as contributions by members to American Jewish history, from Asser Levy to Gershom Mendes Seixas, Emma Lazarus and more, along with other members who were founders of important institutions such as Columbia University, Yeshiva University, and the New York Stock Exchange.

We hope that you will take advantage of this special opportunity that allows you to enter a glorious landmark building with its majestic and inspiring sanctuary and Tiffany stained-glass windows, for this 1 hour and 15-minute experience.
