Abraham Lincoln: A Mensch Among the Jews

April 18 , 7:30 pm

Rabbi Karol highlights three accomplishments during Lincoln’s presidency that benefited the Jews: appointing the first Jewish chaplain for the army; fending off efforts to have the United States declared to be a “Christian nation;” and cancelling General Grant’s infamous and discriminatory Order #11 that forbade Jews from doing business.

Rabbi Karol shares primary documents from the time and discusses how the relatively small national Jewish community was well-organized and unified in standing up for their rights. Because of the way he was raised and the experiences he had, Abraham Lincoln was a mensch toward the Jews he knew, with whom he did business, and served as president.

Free and open to all, light refreshments and coffee will be served.
