“A Blood Artist”
February 1 , 9:00 pm
The new short documentary film by native New Yorker Jeffrey Wengrofsky, “A Blood Artist,” will premiere in conjunction with Secrets of Inner Space.
“A Blood Artist” is a short documentary about Axel Stocks (1946-2016), who was born to a Jewish woman in a Displaced Persons camp after WWII. Her husband, a Jew, and her whole family, had already been exterminated. In order to survive, she was forced to have sex with the Nazis. After the war, Axel and his mother moved to New Jersey, where took up making psychedelic jewelry of an unusual sort. He was introduced to Salvadore Dali, then living at the St. Regis in Manhattan, who asked Axel about his life. When Axel related his story, Dali pronounced that from then on
Axel was to paint in his blood. Axel did so until he died a few years ago (not from blood loss).
“A Blood Artist” will be screened as part of Secrets of Inner Space, a festival about mind, body, blood, and spirit featuring films from Brazil, Japan, Germany, California, Florida, and NYC. Secrets of Inner Space is curated by Jeffrey Wengrofsky. “A Blood Artist” is Wengrofsky’s second film about the Holocaust, following “The Forgiveness of Judith Malina” (starring Judith Malina, with a soundtrack by James Sclavunos).
