I’m writing in response to the article about the recent summit that was held in New York about child abuse (This Is Something We Can’t Ignore, Feb. 10).
I’m delighted to know that the issue is now being openly discussed. When I approached the Israeli government about it in the late 1970s, when I founded ELI: Israel Association for Child Protection, I was told that child abuse doesn’t exist in the Jewish community.
ELI has been working in the charedi community in Israel for many years and we even have an office in Kfar Chabad. ELI developed a school-based child abuse awareness and prevention program many years ago, which it adapted for many audiences, including the charedi schools.
