Beyond Chelsea And Marc

Granted, the interfaith wedding on most people’s minds these days is Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky’s, scheduled for this Saturday evening.

Nonetheless, I offer a shout-out today to Homeshuling’s Amy Meltzer, for a thoughtful piece about her interfaith wedding ceremony eight years ago. I’m at work on a column about different rabbis’ approaches to officiating at intermarriages (not whether or not to officiate, but the diversity of beliefs and practices among those who do officiate.) I noticed in the comments that Amy’s explanation for why her husband Keith never considered conversion was remarkably similar to the reasoning of my husband, Joe: feeling it would be disrespectful to convert without fully believing.

Incidentally, having just visited the very cool Jewish environmental Eden Village Camp last week (article to appear on Wednesday), I also liked Amy’s even-more-recent post "Boreh Pri Ha’Adamah," with pix of her daughters harvesting veggies from the garden.
