Ackerman Wrong On J Street

Ackerman Wrong On J Street

Rep. Gary Ackerman’s condemnation of J Street (“New UN Settlements Fight Rages; J Street Rapped,” Jan. 27) for urging the U.S not to obstruct UN Security Council efforts to push the Middle East peace process forward, in a manner entirely consistent with standing U.S policy, makes no sense.
Growing political uncertainty in Egypt, Jordan and elsewhere in the Arab world underscores the urgency of a just settlement that will give Palestinians a politically and economically viable homeland. If Ackerman really cares about the security of Israel, he will join J Street in urging it to reinstate its freeze on settlement expansion so that negotiations can proceed without further delay. The current impasse is feeding resentment and radicalism among Muslims worldwide, with potentially catastrophic consequences for Israel, the Middle East and the world as a whole.
