A New President, and a New Middle East

Wishing Joe Biden success, Israel's former ambassador to the U.N. hopes he heeds the changes of the past four years.

We congratulate President Biden on his inauguration as the 46th President of the United States. Israel values the unbreakable relationship we have with the United States and we look forward to continue developing the strong ties between our countries.

Many of the region’s countries see the issue of a nuclear Iran as the most pressing challenge facing the Middle East today. I would urge President Biden to recognize the turn of tide in the Middle East. Prior to any discussion with Iran, I would suggest that he conduct talks in full liaison with the region’s countries: Israel and the moderate Arab states. Each of these countries has a deep understanding of the region and will be directly impacted by any changes in policy. It is important that each voice is heard.

I also hope that the new administration will continue to apply maximum pressure on the extremist and fanatical Iranian regime, a regime that spends billions each year in terrorist operations. The Middle East tensions can either be heightened or reduced by President Biden’s appreciation that the Middle East of 2021 is not the same Middle East of 2015 as well as by his crucial first moves in the region.

Wishing President Joe Biden every success.

Ambassador Danny Danon served as Israel’s 17th Permanent Representative to the United Nations and is Chairman of the World Likud.
