Rabbi Sergio Bergman won a seat in the Argentina National Congress and will be the first rabbi to serve as a national lawmaker in the country. ABuenos Aires City lawmaker from the center-right PRO party, he garnered 34.5 percent of the vote to narrowly edge Elisa Carrio of the center-left UNEN party.
Rabbi Bergman will represent Buenos Aires City in the Lower House of the National Congress.
He is the founder of the Judaica Foundation, a network that includes synagogues, educational institutions, social programs, charitable funds, a gay alliance and rural farms. Senior rabbi of the traditional Congregacion Israelita Argentina, he is the founder of Active Memory, a group that demonstrated every Monday for a decade seeking justice for the victims of the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish center in Buenos Aires.
