“Queen Esther’s Dilemma”, a musical play-within-a-play by Broadway playwright Samuel J, borrows its plot from the Biblical Book of Esther, while maintaining the form of a modern-day Purim Shpiel. The Biblical narrative recounts the efforts of Haman, an evil Persian, to annihilate the Jews, and efforts of Queen Esther, her cousin Mordechai and the king of Persia Ahasuerus to stop him. In this theatrical rendering, Esther faces various difficult ethical problems as she strives to be a woman loyal to the interests of the Jews, as interpreted by Mordechai, and yet a person with strong pacifistic inclinations. The play takes place in the settings of a contemporary Purim party, complete with games, dancing, singing, and getting drunk. Starring upcoming actress/singer Amanda Martinez as Queen Esther, famed actor and baritone David Serero as Ahasuerus, Mark Singer as Mordecai and Christopher Romero Wilson as Haman.
